Summary Point

Why is God the best explanation for the apparent design in life?

Subpoints

The extraordinary physical complexity and order of life as well as information (DNA) to create and sustain life are best explained by a divine Creator – God.

The existence of information in life (DNA) cannot be explained by matter and energy (atheism), since it is immaterial and requires a sender – God.

  1. There are numerous examples of physical aspects of life that demonstrate extraordinary order and complexity, clearly pointing to a divine Creator.

    • The extraordinary complexity and order in living organisms is better explained by a divine creator rather than natural selection acting on random mutation of DNA.

    • Various systems within living organisms are highly complex:

      • Humans have 11 complex and ordered systems, such as skeletal, digestive, nervous, respiratory, reproductive, etc.

      • The fact that millions of species have different reproductive systems that are distinct, but compatible with their species points to a divine creator.

    • According to scientist Walt Brown, “Most complex phenomena known to science are found in living systems – including those involving electrical, acoustical, mechanical, chemical, and optical phenomena.”1 (bold added) In other words, the most complicated things in the world are from nature, not what is created by mankind (another intelligent designer). A divine designer is better explanation than random mutations. Brown provides some examples:1

      • Sonar systems of dolphins, porpoises and whales.

      • Radar systems of bats.

      • Aerodynamics of hummingbirds.

      • Navigational systems of birds, fish and insects.

      • Self-repair capabilities of all life. The ability to heal.

    • Development of life before birth is extraordinary. Below is a summary of the initial stages for humans:

      • “The wonders which occur during the nine-month gestation period are unsurpassable. During the first four weeks of the new life, billions of cells are formed, and they arrange themselves according to a fascinating plan to shape the new human being. Around the 15th day, a dramatic new development occurs: the first blood vessels appear…In the embryonic stage, lungs, eyes, and ears develop, although they are not used yet. After two months, the embryo is only three to four centimeters long. It is so small that it could literally fit inside a walnut shell, but even at this stage all organs are already present.”2

  2. Since information to create and sustain life (DNA) is immaterial and requires a sender, it is best explained by an immaterial, intelligent creator – God.

    • Information is immaterial (not matter or energy), so materialism (atheism) fails to explain the existence of information in DNA.

      • Author Werner Gitt provides the following characteristics of information, which run contrary to materialism / atheism: “Theorem 1: The fundamental quantity information is a non-material (mental) entity.  It is not a property of matter, so that purely material processes are fundamentally precluded as sources of information.”3

    • Information has intent, purpose and meaning and therefore requires a sender to generate these characteristics. Materialism / atheism cannot account for this. How can matter and energy create information with intent or purpose? Matter does not think or have intention!

      • Author Werner Gitt supports this point: “According to the information laws, every piece of information requires a sender.”4

    • According to Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft Inc., “DNA is like a computer program but far, far more advanced than any software ever created.”5

Context:

  • In the Blind Watchmaker, atheist scientist Richard Dawkins writes, “Biology is the study of complicated things that give the appearance of having been designed for a purpose.”6

  • Isn’t it possible that they appear designed for a purpose is because they are? The Bible contends that the appearance of design provides evidence for God and I contend that the scientific evidence support this view. See below:

    • since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. (Romans 1:19-20 NIV)

  • DNA is the information required to create living organisms. How does science define information?

    • “Scientifically, we can define information as a coded message containing an expected action and intended purpose.”7

  • Since information has intended purpose, an intelligent source is the best explanation for DNA. How could intention or purpose have arisen from matter? It is NOT possible. An atheist/materialist would have to believe this intention/purpose came by chance.
