Summary Point

According to the Bible, how do I get to heaven?

Subpoints

Based on Christian doctrine, a person can only enter heaven and have eternal life with God if they believe in Jesus Christ, accepting Him as Lord and Savior.

  1. We are all sinners in danger of hell (sin separates us from God).

    • as it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one; (Romans 3:10 CSB emphasis added)

    • For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23 CSB emphasis added)

    • For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 CSB emphasis added)

    • The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who refuses to believe in the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him. (John 3:36 CSB emphasis added)

  2. We cannot go to heaven by our own deeds.

    • For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God's gift- not from works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 CSB emphasis added)

  3. It is through faith in Jesus that one is saved from punishment. This is NOT just believing He exists, but accepting Him as our Lord and Savior, essentially putting our trust in Him to save us from the punishment we deserve for our sins.

    • For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 NIV)

    • if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9 CSB)

    • All the prophets testify about Him that through His name everyone who believes in Him will receive forgiveness of sins." (Acts 10:43 CSB)

  4. According to Jesus, not everyone who claims to be a Christian, is truly a Christian.

    • "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord!' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but [only] the one who does the will of My Father in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, 'Lord, Lord, didn't we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name?' Then I will announce to them, 'I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers! ' (Matthew 7:21-23 CSB)

  5. Genuine faith (trust) in Jesus is accompanied by following His commands and doing good works (good deeds do NOT save us, but validate our faith).

    • Jesus told His disciples – "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. (John 14:15 CSB)

    • Jesus also asked – "Why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and don't do the things I say? (Luke 6:46 CSB)

    • The apostle John wrote – This is how we are sure that we have come to know Him: by keeping His commands. The one who says, "I have come to know Him," without keeping His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (1 John 2:3-4 CSB)

    • John also wrote – Now this is His command: that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another as He commanded us. (1 John 3:23 CSB)

    • James, the brother of Jesus, wrote – In the same way faith, if it doesn't have works, is dead by itself. (James 2:17 CSB)

    • The Luke wrote – Instead, I preached to those in Damascus first, and to those in Jerusalem and in all the region of Judea, and to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works worthy of repentance. (Acts 26:20 CSB emphasis added)

  6. According to the Bible, there is no other religion by which a person can be saved – salvation is only found in Jesus, the Son of God.

    • Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:6 CSB)

    • I, I am the Lord, and there is no other Savior but Me. (Isaiah 43:11 CSB)

    • There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12 CSB)

Context:

  • Doesn’t everyone who tries to be a good person go to heaven? Many people believe this, BUT that is NOT what the Bible says.

  • The Bible is clear that no one is ‘good’. Everyone sins and this separates us from a Holy God. Unlike every other religion, which focuses on trying to do good works, the Bible is clear that the only way we can be saved is by accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior.
