Summary Point

How do I become a Christian?

Subpoints

#1 admit you are a sinner and #2 accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior! Put your faith and trust in Him to save you from your sins.

Dedicate your life to following the Lord Jesus by growing in your relationship with Him and loving other people.

  1. Pray to God to admit you are a sinner and accept the Lord Jesus as your savior.1

    • There is no exact formula for this prayer. It should come from the heart and include an admission of guilt, repenting (desire to turn away) of sins and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior (i.e. saves you from the punishment of your sins). Below discusses these steps in a little more detail:

      • The first step is that you must admit you are a sinner. There is no need for a savior if you don’t first admit you are in trouble and in need of saving. When the apostle Peter addressed a group of people after the resurrection, he taught them about Jesus and included the following:

        • Therefore repent and turn back, that your sins may be wiped out so that seasons of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, (Acts 3:19 CSB)

      • The ultimate step to become a Christian is to accept Jesus are Lord and Savior. The apostle Paul is very clear about this point.

        • if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9 CSB)

  2. Work at growing in your relationship with God and loving people.

    • Growing in your relationship with God takes work, similar to any other relationship in our life. We grow closer to God through prayer, reading the Bible, worship at church, and fellowship with other believers.

    • What about all of God’s commandments? How should we live our lives? Jesus summarized God’s law with the following:

      • When the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they came together in the same place. And one of them, an expert in the law, asked a question to test Him: "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important commandment. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:34-40 CSB)

    • We are not expected to live perfect lives. In fact, we are not able to. But we should put our faith in Jesus and strive to love God and people.

Context:

  • Becoming a Christian is very easy. There are no works that are necessary to become saved. God offers salvation as a gift by grace. It merely requires admitting the need for a savior and genuinely accepting the savior.
