Summary Point

What happens to those who are NOT saved from their sins?

Subpoints

The Bible is clear that hell is a real place and after death we face judgment. Those who are not saved by Jesus will face eternal punishment (hell).

  1. The Bible is clear that hell is a real place.

    • Jesus, who validated His claim to be God, spoke about hell.

      • "And I say to you, My friends, don't fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. But I will show you the One to fear: Fear Him who has authority to throw [people] into hell after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the One to fear! (Luke 12:4-5 CSB emphasis added)

      • "And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." (Matthew 25:46 CSB emphasis added)

    • In Bible verses below, John mentions that Jesus holds the keys to death and Hades:

      • When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. He laid His right hand on me, and said, "Don't be afraid! I am the First and the Last, and the Living One. I was dead, but look-I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and Hades. (Revelations 1:17-18 CSB)

  2. After death, a person faces judgment and it may be too late to change one’s eternal destination.

    • According to the Bible, a person faces judgment after death – see Bible verse below:

      • And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, (Hebrews 9:27 NASB emphasis added)

  3. According to the Bible, if someone has not accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior, God’s wrath remains on them for their sin and eternal punishment awaits.

    • The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who refuses to believe in the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him. (John 3:36 CSB emphasis added)

Context:

  • Hell is not a fictional idea to scare people into behaving well. The Bible is clear that it is a real location. Jesus spoke about hell and warned about who has the ability to send people to hell.

  • What is hell? Apologist Norman Geisler explains:

    • “…hell is a designated place for those who willfully rejected eternal life in favor of eternal separation from God, which results in eternal torment.”1
